Gannon's Antiques and Art highlights several local artists

We would like you to come view some additions to our local artist gallery here at Gannon's Antiques and Art in Fort Myers Florida.

Some of the pieces that we would like to highlight include handcrafted knives composed of turquoise, lapis, stainless steel, antler, composite of powdered precious stones, risen, and coral. They come in many styles including tooled leather pocket knives, boot knives, and kitchen knives. The beauty of these pieces really needs to be experienced in person. They are truly special and unique. No two are exactly alike.

Another artist that we would like to highlight has accomplished some amazing feats with turned wood. Here you see an example of turned mango earwood. The key to the beauty of this piece is the earwood from which it was carved. It has been transformed into this eye dazzling work of art. The detail of the woodgrain is brought out by the extremely smooth finish. The lid of the box is adorned with a pierced carved maple finial.

We have a one of a kind lamp with the base carved of Jacaranda. It has a textural design around the circumference of the lamp. The vivid coloring is created with an alkaline dye.

Here is an amazing example of a jar turned from queen palm. It is adorned with pierced and carved maple base and finial with bamboo accents.

Stangl Pottery, Antique China, Antique earthenware

Stangl Pottery began as a small company known as Hill Pottery started in 1814 in Flemington, NJ by Samuel Hill.  Hill was a utilitarian potter, producing drain pipes and storage crocks and jars from Flemington's red earthenware clay.  By the 1860s, the company had been acquired by Abram Fulper, who continued in the utilitarian pottery business, but produced primarily stoneware, rather than earthenware.

By 1900, the company, now Fulper Pottery Co., was under the direction of William H. Fulper II, grandson of Abram Fulper.  William H. Fulper II was responsible for the development and introduction of Fulper Pottery Co.'s now renowned Vasekraft art pottery in 1909.  In 1910, he hired ceramic engineer Martin Stangl to develop new Fulper Pottery shapes and glazes.

Stangl Pottery

By 1924, Martin Stangl was vice president of the company, and was responsible for the introduction of America's first open stock solid-color dinnerware.  Production had continued all along in the original Flemington factory until the 1920s when another small factory was built in Flemington and a large existing pottery facility in Trenton was acquired by the company.  In 1929, the original factory in Flemington burned, so all production was absorbed by the other two facilities.

Stangl Pottery

In 1935, production was ceased at the small remaining Flemington location, and that building was utilized solely as a retail showroom for the company's ceramic products, becoming one of the Nation's first "factory outlets".  By the 1940s, hand-painted dinnerware had become popular, augmented in 1942 with the introduction of Stangl's best-known product, hand-carved, hand-painted dinnerware.  Stangl's dinnerware and artware was sold through over 3000 department, gift and jewelry stores across America.

Stangl Pottery

From the 1930s through 1978, Stangl's Flemington Outlet showroom was a keenly popular tourist destination.  Folks traveled from far and wide to partake of the bargains in high-quality pottery offered there.  During busy week-ends, there were often as many as 1000 patrons visiting Stangl's Flemington showrooms.  Automobile clubs and tour bus lines often included the Stangl Outlet as an integral part of many road trips.
Shopping at Stangl seems always to be remembered as delightful experience.  Whether twenty, forty or even fifty years later, visitors recall with pleasure the original Kiln display, or searching through endless stacks of dinnerware for those wonderful Stangl bargains.

By November 1978, Stangl Pottery ceased manufacturing and closed forever, signaling the end of a truly unique American folk-art product.

Stangl Tropical Ware Vase Circa 1930s

This is a beautiful example of Stangl's 7 inch Tropical Ware vase with applied curlicues. The embellishment is covered with a dripping blue glaze against the vases semigloss deep purple, or eggplant, background. The bottom of the vase is impressed with the company name, Stangl, and the shape number, which in this instance is 2024 – 7". This vase was available in a variety of colors, but the deep purple variation seems to be the most sought after.

Manuel Carbonell Sculpture

MANUEL CARBONELL was born in 1919 in Sancti Spiritus Cuba. In his early childhood he started to draw with great success, and this led to his entry into the “Academia de Bellas Artes de Alejandro,” in Havana. His first efforts as a sculptor were conventional studies in stone and marble. In these early works he shows his rebellion against these materials. Useful experimentation led him to the use of bronze and aluminum, in which materials he found the possibility to express reality, utmost simplicity and motion. After winning prizes in both national and international exhibitions, he traveled and continued to study in Italy, Spain and France. In Carra, Italy, he carved a Madonna, which won the first prize in a very competitive exhibition. It was in Paris that he found his present personal style. Carbonell enjoyed great success in his native Cuba, which he subsequently left because he could not live in a country where freedom is suppressed.
This is just one of the fine art pieces we have displayed in our art gallery at Gannon's Antiques & Art. If you have art we can help you with please contact us.
